Welcome to Boomtown!

aLAcrity Boomerangs is a group of boomerang enthusiasts from Los Angeles. At the moment, it is comprised of three people: Manny (a.k.a. v12aero), phnxhawk and Charles (a.k.a. hey_kuya).

Manny and I (phnxhawk) started this blog to share our interest in boomerangs--throwing and tuning, making our own rangs, as well as unraveling the science behind them. As we continue our journey into the world of boomerangs, we hope to make new friends and to expand our horizons. In this blog, we will post such things as videos from our regular throwing sessions, musings and lessons learned from throwing, and thoughts on making our own rangs.

Manny and I started throwing boomerangs since Spring 2009. It has been a long road as we developed a semblance of technique for throwing 'rangs. Nevertheless, after many a bruised hand or windy day, our fascination with these returning throwing sticks remains undimmed. We most certainly have more to learn about boomerangs, but we'll keep at it as long as we continue to have many happy returns.

aLAcrity Awakens From Hibernation

--by phnxhawk--

After a little over two months of staying indoors due to sickness, inclement weather and other personal business requiring attention, aLAcrity is returning to the stretches of grass and sand that have longed to see boomerangs soaring high above once more.

Southern California has been seeing its share of rain and cold during the winter season--as close to a winter as it gets here, anyway. In between those bouts of precipitation, however, the weather has been most delightful. A breeze to kick off the morning and some stronger winds in the afternoon, all under a fairly clear sky. The beach can be a little chilly, but still enjoyable.

I myself am feeling well enough to be chasing down boomerangs again. Almost as if to celebrate this recovery, I spent all day Sunday throwing boomerangs. Manny and I met up with hey_kuya to throw with him at a park in the morning. Afterward, I trekked back to the beach to throw with another fellow SoCal thrower, Larry. The entire day was a blast. Off the hook, as it were.

I put together some video clips from our session with hey_kuya to commemorate a great day of throwing 'rangs:

The breeze in the morning was perfect for throwing our light wind, short to medium range boomerangs. As you can see, the Diabolino by Georgi Dimantchev was the star of the day at the park. In the afternoon, stronger winds lent themselves better to some longer range, heavier paxolin and G12 'rangs, which is exactly what Larry likes to throw. Fortunately for me, he had a few extra Blue Star 'rangs for me to toss. I had initially shied away from picking up the more expensive G12 booms, but a few throws were more than enough to convince me that the potential for some awesome flights were worth it. All in all, Sunday was a day for many happy returns.

As we build up momentum once more, Manny, hey_kuya and I are hoping to put together some new reviews and perhaps also some commentaries on our forays into designing and making our own boomerangs. So, stay tuned.
